The End

It was a blast playing in Grim Reefer and doing numerous shows. Thanks to the promoters who made that possible, and great support for the bands and friends we've shared the stage with! It seems this band has run its course, and we are moving on to other projects. Tanner and I will be continuing PSILOCYBIN - http://www.myspace.com/psilocybindoom and our own other projects as well. We will be finishing the 15 month legacy with a show Friday Dec 3rd at Funky Winkerbeans (37 West Hastings) with our bros in HOOPSNAKE (Squamish), WEAPON (local) & OLD FUCK. party on and light that joint, kid!!!

PS. We will have some free CD's of our split with KUSH to give away at the show. Also, in the next 5 or 6 months, look out for two EP's to be released on CD consisting of all our material with some sick artwork!

Splits out in June / Looking for more Gigs

So our gig at Las Brisas went well (at least our set), now it's time to move on and play some more! We already have one MORE new track to be revealed at the next show, on top of the 7 we already play. So if you are putting a gig on or know of one happening, let us know through here or Myspace (myspace.com/grimreefervancouver) or even e-mail us at grim.reefer@hotmail.com ...We're fucking tight and want to play some fuckin' stoner doom!

Moving onto other things, we now have more information on the splits coming out in June through Hollow Skull Recordings. The artwork will be finished and ready by the end of the month.

THE FIRST SPLIT is Grim Reefer / Kush - Kush is a psychadelic drone/ambient/fucked up one-man project from Colorado, US. I believe that he is also doing the art for this one. The CD will feature a wicked 4 page booklet & will be released as 300 copies. It will be available to purchase directly off of our MySpace page. This will be the tracklisting:

- G R I M R E E F E R -
1. Third Lung
2. Solmestrom
3. Kief
- K U S H -
4. Green Addiction
5. Two Bags
6. Headrush

THE SECOND SPLIT is Grim Reefer / Psilocybin - Psilocybin is a sideproject of mine (Dragos) that has existed since 2005, the older & more low-budget recordings released through various demos EP's and tapes. Fortunately, the band is now very solid with a full line-up (also featuring Tanner on bass) and we will have solid brand new recordings. The CD will feature a 4-page booklet and will be limited to a 200 press. It will also be available to purchase direclty off our Myspace page. This is the tracklisting:

- G R I M R E E F E R -
1. Kief
2. Third Lung
- P S I L O C Y B I N -
3. The Night Prism
4. Anaconda

Any further questions about the splits can be referred to Blob at hollowskull@mail.com (Hollow Skull Recordings). The artwork and any new info will be posted here and perhaps tweeted if we feel necessary!

Grim Reefer - Demos
By Janet
March 30, 2010

These guys contacted me a few weeks ago and wanted me to hear their stuff, the name alone was enough to get my immediate attention, but honestly I get some horrid stuff that comes my way and so I always screen something prior to a review and after I have listened to it thoroughly and can feel comfortable referring you all to check it out too, so I'm always late with reviews, but hopefully worth the wait. This 2-some hails from Vancouver, B.C. and claims they are on the " Quest for the Holy Bong" through this sludge/stoner/Iron Monkey and Electric Wizard breed and clone the bastard child with some Eyehetgod and Melvins sounding project.

It's always a challenge to review bands that only have 2-3 songs out and they are rough quality demos, but when one comes along that sounds good enough when it's that raw that you can feel the potential as well as hear it, it's worth spewing out a few lines for a review on them. I REALLY hope they release some more stuff and with a slightly better quality to be able to really judge though, but I can say for sure that they have something, just not what yet.

On the Radar: Grim Reefer
Posted in On the Radar on February 23rd, 2010 by H.P. Taskmaster

If you’ve got a couple minutes to kill at work this afternoon and feel like listening to someone’s rehearsal tapes (hey, it happens), pop over to Grim Reefer’s MySpace. The British Columbia band — who, yes, have taken their name from a Bongzilla song — consists only of two members: guitarist/vocalist Dragos Baciu and drummer Tanner Hartmann. They’ve upload two tracks so far, “Kief” and “Third Lung.” Both were recorded live.

And they sound like it. I don’t know if I’ve ever put forth my theory on crappy practice recordings in this space, but I’m a huge fan of the idea of them. Think back to the heavy metal days of demo trading and how it changed the world. What’s different, other than the lack of postage needing to be paid? Grim Reefer, whose sound quality is better than plenty I’ve heard, are participating in a grand tradition (actually several). So, you know, good for them.

I won’t go so far as to say it’s mandatory listening, but again, if you have a minute to check it out, you might find Grim Reefer worth keeping on your radar. You don’t get so much of a sense of it from these recordings, because Baciu’s guitar comes across so thickly, but they could use a bassist. Hopefully they’ll get to work on that and drop an update with whatever they do next. Meantime: free music, goofy name, derivatively weedian ideology. Life could be worse.
